Mastodon appear on the latest episode of Amoeba Music’s “What’s In My Bag?” series. The show is known for artists selecting albums, books, and more from around the record store, giving insight into their personal tastes and the influences behind their work.
Drummer-vocalist Brann Dailor focuses less on a theme and more on a series of underrated records by classic artists. His first choice is the psychedelic classic Love’s Secret Domain by Coil, citing youthful LSD trips. Cocteau Twins’ second LP Victorialand is met with a story of his youth in Rochester, New York, while Jeff Buckley’s Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk and Björk’s Selma Songs along with his final pick of Blonde Redhead’s Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons are great records often overlooked among more popular records by the artists in question.
Bassist-vocalist Troy Sanders discusses losing his house in a hurricane along with all of his personal belongings, leading him to choose new vinyl for his family. His first selection is Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard of Ozz , mentioning the honor of Mastodon playing at Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s “Back to the Beginning” concert. His four selections after this are Men at Work’s Business as Usual for himself, Barry Manilow’s Greatest Hits Vol. II for his wife, My Chemical Romance’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge for his daughter, and I Prevail’s Violent Nature for his son.
Guitarist Bill Kelliher, meanwhile, sticks to personal history for his picks. Rush’s A Farewell to Kings is met with a story of him learning “Xanadu” as a young guitarist, while Metric’s Synthetica has him tell a story of an early tour Mastodon took where they listened to nothing but Metric in the van. The Cramps’ … Off the Bone has him talk about his interest in punk and surf music, describing the group as “if Elvis was born in Hell.” His final two picks of Clutch’s self-titled and Weezer’s Pinkerton sees Kelliher discuss his love of simplicity and great songwriting, as well as his early love of Clutch frontman Neil Fallon.
