Korda, Corpuz thrash Hull, Woad to make history in tied foursomes session

Team Europe and Team USA both won two points during the opening session of the Solheim Cup in the Netherlands; Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz extended their 100 per cent record together in foursomes; watch live on Sky Sports Golf

Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz created Solheim Cup history with their statement victory over Charley Hull and Lottie Woad in the Friday foursomes, as Team Europe and Team USA shared the spoils in the opening session.

Hull had won two of her previous three Solheim Cup matches against Korda, including a dominant 6&4 singles victory two years ago, although saw her and Woad dominated by the American pair in the opening match at Bernardus Golf.

Korda and Corpuz recovered from losing the first hole to race to a 4&3 victory, seeing them become the first American pair in Solheim Cup history to win five foursomes matches together and the first - from either side - to win five matches in a row.

Alison Lee and Lauren Coughlin also came from behind to win, defeating Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Celine Boutier 3-2, as both sides claimed two points apiece in rainy conditions to leave the biennial contest delicately poised heading into the afternoon fourballs.

Swedish duo Maja Stark and Linn Grant claimed Team Europe's first point by beating Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho 3&2, while Leona Maguire and Esther Henseleit edged out Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan 2up to leave a tied opening session for just the third time in Solheim Cup history.

Team USA captain Angela Stanford sent out Korda and Corpuz first, having won all their foursomes together in 2023 and 2024, with the American duo excelling again despite Woad winning the opening hole with a birdie.

Neither side could take advantage of the par-five fifth before Team USA won three consecutive holes from the sixth to take control of the contest, where Hull was far from her usual best alongside her English playing partner.

Pars were enough for Team USA to win the 12th and 13th holes, with Woad reducing the deficit with a birdie at the next before Korda and Corpuz closed out victory with a par on the par-three 15th.

"We just lost a bit of momentum at the end of the front nine," Woad said. "They made a couple birdies and we missed some good chances. I think once you lose momentum, it can be tough to come back."

Victory saw the pair break the record for most points ever by an American pair, breaking the previous best of 4.5 points from Dottie Pepper and Brandie Burton, while Korda's seven career points in foursomes is the third-highest ever for Team USA.

"I enjoy playing with her [Corpuz] so much," Korda said. "We have a lot of fun out there. "She's just such a solid player. It's really good to look rely on her and it's also fun."

Europe were ahead in match two until Madsen found the water off the sixth tee, with Lee and Coughlin winning three off the next five holes on their way to a victory that doubled Team USA's lead.

"This whole morning we just played super consistent," Lee said. "We just kept it in the fairway, kept it on the greens, gave each other birdie chances when we could. I'm just really happy with how we performed."

The bottom match saw Grant and Stark race into a four-hole lead after seven, with Grant then holing from the bunker at the ninth to retain their advantage, only for Zhang and Kupcho to threaten a comeback by claiming back-to-back holes from the 10th.

A par was enough for the Swedish pair to claim the 15th and wrapped up victory at the next, while Henseleit and Maguire were taken to the final hole to complete their win after a tight tussle.

Maguire has won 9.5 points from 13 Solheim Cup matches, the highest percentage of points won in European Solheim Cup history among players with at least 10 matches played.

Sky Sports Golf will have at least 12 hours of live coverage from the first two days, with coverage continuing on Saturday at 6am ahead of the opening foursomes match teeing off at 6.40am (7.40am local time).

The afternoon fourballs are scheduled to start at 12.05pm (1.05pm local time), with coverage continuing until after the final putt is holed, while Sunday singles coverage begins at 9am (10am local time) ahead of the opening tee shot at 10.10am (11.10am local time).
