TV tonight: it’s the final chapter of the landmark 7 Up series

Oscar-winner Asif Kapadia takes the reins for a last catchup with the 70-year-olds. Plus: a year in the life of Gemma Collins. Here’s what to watch this evening

9pm, ITV1 Asif Kapadia directs the final instalment of the long-running documentary (it first aired in 1964) and it does all its subjects, and their loyal viewers, proud. Meeting the now 70-year-olds again tugs at the existential heartstrings and some, such as cheeky dreamer Tony, have stayed close to their childhood selves, whereas the more mellow John worries about how he has been portrayed. 7.30pm, BBC Two The upbeat sand-carving competition reaches its semi-final, as good a reason as any for host Iain Stirling to dress up as a Baywatch lifeguard. He gives the remaining four teams six hours to construct the tallest sculpture they can. It’s a high-risk, high-reward challenge … but who will be left standing? Graeme Virtue

8pm, BBC One Beth is perfectly precise with patterns. Emma’s garments are packed with character. Anna’s love of costume has won her seven transformation challenges. Who will be this year’s champion? The last tasks include a cummerbund and bow tie, a beach club outfit made out of gala table linen, and a showstopper for the Sewing Bee’s version of the Met Gala. H ollie Richardson

It’s been 15 years since the GC introduced herself to the world on Towie. But this documentary series is the most personal look we’ve had, and it follows what Collins calls “the toughest year of my life”. From receiving hate mail to her mother’s illness, starting an IVF journey and her fiance’s addiction issues, it’s certainly a bumpy and emotional time. But there’s always some GC spirit to get by with. HR

9pm, BBC One It’s finals week in the kitchen and that means a few surprises. It’s off to Crufts for a slightly bizarre challenge: Michelin-starred chef Tom Shepherd has designed a doggy-style menu (including a bone-shaped dessert), which the finalists must cook. Then, back to base for a meal that evokes a favourite holiday. Phil Harrison

9pm, Channel 4 The percentage of people in the UK in favour of abolishing the royal family is at a high, according to this report. John Humphrys, a royal sceptic, who had encounters with the queen, speaks to those for and against the monarchy. HR
