Bob Dylan Announces 39-Disc The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings Box Set with 371 Unreleased Tracks

Bob Dylan will release a massive, 39-disc box set called The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings on November 6th. Coming from Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the collection includes 371 never-before-released recordings captured during nearly every concert Dylan preformed on the second leg of the legendary “Revue” tour.

Plus, the entire May 16th, 1976 show from Fort Worth, Texas will also be released as a 3xLP set on the same date. Remixed from the original multi-track tapes, the vinyl is being previewed with “Going, Going, Gone,” which you can stream below.

The second leg of Dylan’s “The Rolling Thunder Revue” tour spanned 27 dates from April 18th to May 25th ’76. The folk icon was accompanied by Joan Baez, who appears on vocals and guitars on a number of tracks, including “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Railroad Boy,” “Wild Mountain Thyme,” and “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos).” Other guests include Willie Nelson (“Gotta Travel On” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” Houston), Joni Mitchell (“Gotta Travel On,” Fort Worth), Allen Ginsberg (“Gotta Travel On,” Fort Collins), and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot.

Dylan’s band for the trek featured bassist Rob Stoner, violinist Scarlet Rivera, drummers Howie Wyeth and Gary Burke, guitarists Mick Ronson (David Bowie’s Spiders from Mars), guitarist Steven Soles, steel guitarist/mandolinist/violins/dobroist David Mansfiled, and the guitar/piano great T Bone Burnett.

Of the 381 tracks on the 39-disc deluxe set, 371 have never before been released. That includes the May 23rd, 1976 performance in Fort Collins that was broadcast only once as the NBC TV special Hard Rain and never-again released. In the liner notes for the box, music journalist Mikal Gilmore wrote, “One night, one hour only. It never saw any time in a theater. It was never rebroadcast, never issued as a video tape or DVD. It’s gone. All that’s left of the Rolling Thunder movie that was never made but instead played out on stages for four-and-a-half weeks in the spring of 1976, is what you now hold in your hands. Play the music, close your eyes, and watch the story.”
