DoorDash has built an AI agent that takes food orders inside Apple’s Messages app. Typing “ order my usual protein bowl to the office ” is meant to be enough. An American waitlist opened on Wednesday.
It matches a phone number to a DoorDash account, reads the order history and charges the stored card, as Bloomberg reported . It also suggests recipes from a photograph of a fridge.
Bloomberg tested an early version and found errors. It gave prices that differed from the app, and photographs that did not match what it recommended. DoorDash says waitlist users get a newer version.
In America that is a bug. In Europe a quoted price that does not match the one charged is a legal question, and DoorDash owns much of that market.
It bought Deliveroo for £2.9B last year, having taken Wolt before that, and now covers more than 40 countries.
The Unfair Commercial Practices Directive treats false information about “ the price or the manner in which the price is calculated ” as a misleading action. It must also be likely to make an average consumer decide differently. A wrong price in a chat window fits that more readily than one in a menu.
The market around it is consolidating. Uber has agreed a $14.8B takeover of Delivery Hero, and Just Eat Takeaway went to Prosus. European delivery is now largely two American companies.
Andy Fang, a DoorDash co-founder, said agents are a new app paradigm and the company is building for it. People are already ordering more frequently, he said.
Other agents circle the same customers. Instinct raised $1B for one that rings restaurants itself , and Bloomberg Intelligence warns such tools could shift traffic and customers away from established platforms.
DoorDash is talking to Meta about an official link to its agent, Muse. Tony Xu, DoorDash’s chief executive, sits on Meta’s board.
Muse books, buys and negotiates for people, the position DoorDash would rather hold. Fang called the trend a tailwind, because the delivery data is his company’s.
A second product lets company assistants order in bulk. A workplace chatbot can collect replies and place a group order with no human. SpaceXAI, Cognition and Mercor use it internally.
None of it has reached Europe. The AI Act has required since 2 August that people be told when they deal with an AI system. Which rule bites first when this reaches Wolt is the thing to watch.
