Swedish municipality of Borlänge says it has found no evidence of election fraud

An internal review by the municipality showed no evidence of systematic electoral fraud occurring at the municipality's polling stations, Borlänge Municipality, in Dalarna, has stated in a press release. A national investigation is ongoing.

An internal review by the municipality showed no evidence of systematic electoral fraud occurring at the municipality's polling stations, Borlänge Municipality, in Dalarna, has stated in a press release. A national investigation is ongoing.

The municipality's election office has examined incident reports and daily logs, spoken with poll workers and election officials, and, where applicable, gathered supplementary information from individual voters.

"The election office's internal review shows no evidence of systematic or organised electoral fraud in connection with the voting process at our polling stations," says Fredrik Holm, Deputy Municipal Chief Executive of Borlänge Municipality and head of the municipality's election office.

The municipality has still decided to await the outcome of the ongoing national police investigation into suspected electoral fraud, which is being handled by the Swedish Police Authority's National Operations Department.

The municipality previously stated that it had seen no signs of electoral fraud occurring at a specific polling station.

"Our assessment of the voting at the 'Kupolen' early voting station is that the process went well, without any major incidents," Fredrik Holm, Deputy Municipal Chief Executive and election coordinator for Borlänge Municipality, told public broadcaster Sveriges Radio .

The investigation currently being led by the National Anti-Corruption Unit is into electoral fraud in Dalarna. According to reports by several media outlets, the suspicions involve, among other things, voters receiving pre-marked ballots, though this has not been confirmed by prosecutors.

No one has been formally notified of suspicion of a crime or detained, but three individuals are implicated in the investigation.

The prosecutor has previously confirmed to P4 Dalarna that the investigation is linked to the Left Party in Borlänge and the campaign of Left Party member Mohamed Ali, who secured the party's only parliamentary seat in Dalarna through preferential votes.

Ali himself has stated that he is shocked by the reports and has requested a two-week leave of absence from Parliament pending the outcome of the investigation.
