Reunited Midwest emo pioneers American Football have influenced a great many bands over the years. They've been back together since 2014, though they haven't always had an easy time with it , and young artists like Hayley Williams and Turnstile's Brendan Yates have lined up to work with them. While they're out there promoting their fourth album , American Football recently did an in-studio session for SiriusXMU and covered one of their own great influences, the Cure.

Grayson Haver Currin's recent extensive GQ profile of American Football had plenty of troubling revelations, and it also had singer/guitarist Mike Kinsella talking about how formative bands like the Cure were for him: "The Smiths, The Cure, I just thought all music had to be sad, that all music had to be … earnest ? I never got into pop-punk, any band of goofballs. That itch gets scratched by hanging out with actual humans or watching sports. If I want to fuck off, I can fuck off."

In their SiriusXMU session, American Football took on the Cure's classic "Boys Don't Cry" and utterly transformed it. The slowed the song down, built in tons of interweaving acoustic guitar lines, and added some funereal harmonies. It's very cool to hear this extremely familiar song in such a different form. Watch a clip below.

Yesterday, Mike Kinsella teased that cover on Instagram, posting a video of himself playing acoustic and building an instrumental medley out of "Boys Don't Cry" and American Football's own "Never Meant" while his dog sleeps next to him.
