Woodside Energy has paused work on its Scarborough gas platform off Western Australia after Greenpeace protesters climbed aboard.
Early start-up work at the site has stopped, Australia’s biggest gas exporter said, Bloomberg reported .
“Greenpeace’s actions have triggered a significant, potentially costly and entirely avoidable response,” Woodside said.
The firm said it wants the authorities to act firmly and enforce the law in full.
The protesters slept on the platform on Saturday night, Greenpeace said. Two set up hanging tents on the structure, while two others went back to the group’s ship, the Rainbow Warrior.
The two who stayed were taken into police custody on Sunday afternoon, Greenpeace said in an update.
Greenpeace says the project puts sea life at risk and will add to planet-warming emissions.
Scarborough is 98% complete, according to Woodside’s website. It is on track to ship its first cargo of liquefied natural gas in the fourth quarter.
