Last night, Druski made SNL history as the first digital content creator to host the show. It was the Strokes' fifth time as musical guests. However, it was the first time playing the show without guitarist Nick Valensi, who has been on a "temporary break" from them for the past six months. Longwave's Steve Schiltz has been filling in.
The Strokes performed the songs "Lonely In The Future" and "Going Shopping." For the latter, they brought out Walton Goggins to play bongos like he does in the song's music video. Guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. donned a Lou Reed T-shirt throughout both sets.
The cold open was another Trump freeze-frame sketch, where James Austin Johnson's Donald Trump interrupted Sarah Sherman's Chuck Schumer and Kenan Thompson's Hakeem Jeffries who were celebrating the blue tsunami from the midterms and how they were never relinquishing current spots of power. As Trump, Johnson made jokes about millennial cringe being back and got Edward Sharpe/stomp-clap-hey and New Girl jokes in there. Colin Jost came out as warmonger Pete Hegseth and then gave Trump a little booty show. The sketch ended with Texas Senator-elect James Talarico coming out, freeze-framing Johnson's Trump, and making a joke about how many Trump freezer cold opens there's been. It was getting very meta.
During his monologue, Druski shouted out his family who were sitting in the audience and later, Emma Stone came out. They're costars in next year's The Catch . The night's episode also had a You Can See Everything parody, called Dru Can See Everything , with Druski (as himself) instead of Nathan Fielder, and that featured Ben Marshall's Billy Evans rapping in a Coulda Been Records bit.
During Weekend Update, there was a joke that involved Bob Dylan, the Pope, and My Chemical Romance: "Pop Leo was photographed with Bob Dylan this week, apparently right before the Pope dropped him off at a My Chemical Romance concert."
There was also a musical sketch about a botched engagement, which referenced Phoebe Bridgers. To close the episode, there was another musical sketch, called Golden Age Of Hip-Hop, about an '80s anti-gang rap group called Lenny & The Street Smart Crew. Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Austin Butler, and Michael B. Jordan came out for goodnights. Druski was beaming and Chappelle was smoking a cigarette.
After the episode, the Strokes released a new music video for "Lonely In The Future," directed by Warren Fu and featuring puppet caricatures of the band (including Valensi) and various personalities like Lou Reed, Lee Camp, Stanley Kubrick, Chris Hedges, Anthony Fantano, Chris Smalls, Elon Musk, Greta Thunberg, Rick Rubin, and Rupert Murdoch. (The song has a lyric dissing Fantano.) The puppets were created by Spitting Image, the company behind the British satirical program of the same name and Genesis’ iconic "Land Of Confusion” video.
