Spain faces record summer heat as El Niño raises economic risks
Spain’s state weather agency is forecasting another exceptionally hot summer with a high probability of severe storms, adding fresh strain to the country's agriculture, energy grids, and public health systems.
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is forecasting a hotter-than-usual summer across the country, with the probability exceeding 70 percent across most of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. This follows a spring that ended with a severe May heatwave, pushing thermometers to 40.5°C at Seville Airport and 39.5°C at Córdoba Airport.
For Spain's agricultural sector and water-intensive industries, the outlook compounds existing strain after a markedly dry spring. Rainfall accumulated to just 134 litres per square metre, equivalent to 75 percent of the normal amount and marking the fourteenth driest spring since 1961. Persistently high temperatures will accelerate soil evaporation and further stress regional water reserves.
This local picture aligns with a worsening global climate framework. In June 2026, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the World Meteorological Organisation confirmed the formation of El Niño, warning of a 63 percent chance it becomes a historically powerful "Super El Niño" by year-end. "El Niño is already here," said Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo, noting that "models point to a very intense episode, with temperature anomalies exceeding two degrees."
While Aemet notes no direct mathematical link between the Pacific phenomenon and Iberian weather, the immense intensity contributes to rising global baseline temperatures. It also increases the likelihood of a significantly rainier autumn, which could disrupt late-season harvests and supply chains. In the nearer term, meteorologists estimate a 40 to 50 percent chance of a wetter-than-usual summer, with severe afternoon thunderstorms expected in southeastern Spain and the eastern Canary Islands.
The structural shift in Spain's climate is creating persistent challenges for public health infrastructure and workforce productivity. In 2025, Spain recorded 25 record-breaking hot days compared to zero for cold days. Over the past decade, the country has logged 221 record hot days versus just seven cold ones, demonstrating that extreme heatwaves have become 32 times more frequent than in a stable climate.
Rising sea temperatures add further risk to coastal economies and marine fisheries. The water surface surrounding Spain averaged an astonishing 20.1°C in 2025, the second highest on record, with vast areas of the Mediterranean Sea breaking annual records not seen since at least 1940. Aemet notes that "the warming trend is clear," with Spain's average annual temperature having increased by 1.75°C since 1961.
