World Cup singalong boosts Oasis streaming revenue

World Cup singalong boosts Oasis streaming revenue

England’s World Cup singalong to Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’ has triggered a 50 per cent UK streaming spike, highlighting how major sporting events drive significant revenue for legacy music catalogues.

England’s 4-2 World Cup victory over Croatia in Dallas on June 17 concluded with a spontaneous singalong of Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’, creating a viral moment that has delivered a measurable commercial windfall for the band’s catalogue. Players including Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon were filmed mouthing the lyrics to the 1995 single, a scene that prompted a 50 per cent spike in streams on Spotify in the UK.

The immediate financial impact was highlighted by Liam Gallagher, who noted the surge in plays ahead of England’s subsequent match against Ghana. Speaking on talkSport, Noel Gallagher acknowledged the ongoing earning power of the track, stating that global royalties amount to “an extraordinary amount of money.” He noted that the song is “being played all over the world, somewhere, right now. Apart from North Korea.”

For the music industry, the incident illustrates how major international sporting events act as powerful, organic marketing tools for legacy catalogues. ‘Wonderwall’ has sustained remarkable commercial longevity since its initial release, when it reached Number Two on the official singles chart. It was the biggest-selling Britpop track of the 1990s and, as of 2024, holds the title of the most-streamed song from the 1970s to the 1990s.

That streaming dominance was further cemented by the track’s inclusion on the setlist for Oasis’s Live ’25 reunion tour. The World Cup exposure effectively provides a secondary promotional boost to a song that already anchors a highly lucrative back catalogue.

Beyond the economic metrics, the moment resonated as a rare instance of public unity between a national team and its traveling support. Captain Harry Kane described it as “one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt,” emphasising the emotional connection with supporters. Midfielder Declan Rice noted the uniqueness of experiencing the anthem in Dallas.

Noel Gallagher admitted he “couldn’t actually believe” the players knew the words, adding he was “staggered that Jude Bellingham knows the lyrics.” The remark carries a slight edge, as Bellingham scored a late winner against Gallagher’s beloved Manchester City while playing for Real Madrid in early 2025. Manchester City defender John Stones, who created a playlist with Gallagher in 2018, revealed the club still uses the song as a walk-out track, though the songwriter joked he would prefer ‘Rock And Roll Star’.

England will play Panama in the group stage on June 27. If the team reaches the final in New York, Gallagher remarked that his sons, who are England fans, would witness a surreal convergence of personal and national success.
