Antonelli dominates Austrian practice as Mercedes internal gap widens

Kimi Antonelli topped both Friday practice sessions at the Austrian Grand Prix, underlining Mercedes' current technical superiority in Formula One. The 19-year-old set a time of 1:07.014s in the second session, finishing 0.237s clear of Oscar Piastri's McLaren.

The margin is particularly significant for Mercedes' championship strategy. Antonelli achieved his fastest time on worn soft tyres during his second flying lap, yet still left his team-mate George Russell more than six tenths of a second adrift in sixth place. Russell currently sits third in the world championship, 50 points behind Antonelli.

This performance gap at the Red Bull Ring reverses a brief trend from the previous round in Barcelona, where Russell appeared to match Antonelli before the Italian retired with a power unit failure. Antonelli still leads the championship by 41 points over Lewis Hamilton, who could only manage fifth for Ferrari.

While Antonelli's pace reassures Mercedes of its outright speed, the manufacturer faces a renewed competitive threat from McLaren. Russell expressed concern over McLaren's pace after the session. "Straight out of the blocks in FP2, McLaren looked flying, to be honest," Russell said. "Their race pace, especially on Lando's side looked a bit better than us."

Piastri offered a more measured assessment of the competitive order, noting that Mercedes still held an edge. "We were a step behind Mercedes, or at least Kimi, which we expected," Piastri said. "I think for Kimi to do that kind of time on his second lap on the soft is quite impressive, so we'll have to wait and see."

The rest of the European manufacturer grid showed mixed fortunes. Max Verstappen was fourth in a heavily upgraded Red Bull, half a second off the pace. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the top ten, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished eighth.

The session also highlighted the steep operational learning curve for new entrants. Cadillac endured a disastrous day, with Sergio Perez stopping on track in both sessions and Valtteri Bottas's car catching fire in the pit lane after his floor dragged along the asphalt.

The intra-team dynamic at Mercedes will be a focal point heading into Saturday's qualifying. Russell did find some encouragement during longer race simulation runs, suggesting the gap may narrow in Sunday's Grand Prix. However, Antonelli's Friday display reasserted his status as the clear title favourite, placing the pressure squarely on his team-mate and rival constructors to respond overnight.
