Austrian heatwave damages transport networks as European nuclear plants curb output
Record-breaking temperatures in Austria have warped railway tracks and buckled motorways, foreshadowing broader disruptions as heat forces nuclear power plants across Central Europe to reduce electricity generation.
Austria recorded 40C in Vienna on Sunday, the country's second-highest temperature ever and a new June record. Other provinces set similar June highs, with Langenlebarn reaching 39.9C and Innsbruck hitting 38.7C. Temperatures are expected to remain extreme on Monday before dropping below 30C by Thursday.
The immediate economic toll is visible on Austria's transport networks. National rail operator ÖBB warned that extreme thermal stress causes track warping, a phenomenon that forces slower speeds, line closures and timetable changes. The company asked passengers to postpone non-essential travel. Disruptions already include closures near Landeck and Hadersdorf am Kamp, alongside replacement buses for Vienna tram lines 25, 26 and 27.
Motorways are failing under similar strain. ASFINAG, the Austrian motorway operator, reported that concrete slabs expanded and buckled across all three lanes of the A1 Westautobahn near Haag on Saturday. The incident left only one lane open and caused a two-kilometre tailback despite low traffic. ASFINAG noted such damage is neither predictable nor avoidable at these temperatures, though crews can typically mill and refill surfaces within 24 hours to restore traffic.
Power supply strained across the continent
Austria's infrastructure failures mirror a wider European crisis. Neighbouring Germany and the Czech Republic exceeded 41C, while Poland recorded 40.5C in Słubice. The heat is now limiting power generation precisely when cooling demand peaks. In Hungary, the Paks nuclear plant reduced output from one reactor as Danube water temperatures approached 30C.
Switzerland’s Axpo temporarily shut both reactors at its Beznau plant on Friday. France’s EDF also curtailed generation during the week. Nuclear facilities rely on river water for cooling, but regulations prevent them from discharging overheated water back into ecosystems, forcing operators to scale back.
The repeated failure of concrete roads and steel rails highlights the mounting cost of adapting European infrastructure to climate extremes. When simultaneous heatwaves also force baseload nuclear plants offline, the structural vulnerabilities of continental supply chains and power grids become sharply apparent.
