Antwerp fire kills five and overwhelms local emergency services
A devastating apartment block fire in Antwerp has killed at least five people and forced Belgian authorities to activate a medical emergency plan to prevent nearby hospitals from being overwhelmed.
At least five people were killed and many others injured on Wednesday when a major fire tore through a high-rise apartment block in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The blaze erupted mid-morning in the Linkeroever neighborhood, a densely populated residential district on the city's eastern edge.
The scale of the disaster prompted local authorities to activate a medical emergency plan designed specifically to prevent nearby hospitals from being saturated by the influx of casualties. "Right now, unfortunately, at least 5 people have died in the fire. There are also a significant number of seriously injured people, as well as a number of lightly injured," Antwerp police spokesperson Kim Bastiaens told Belgian private broadcaster VTM.
More than 200 people live in the 10-story building, which was fully evacuated as firefighters battled the intense flames in difficult conditions. Police deployed specialized drone units to assist in the operation, while residents in the surrounding area were ordered to keep windows and doors shut and turn off ventilators due to the heavy volume of smoke.
The deadly incident highlights the inherent vulnerabilities in large-scale residential housing blocks found across European urban centers. Linkeroever is heavily defined by its towering apartment complexes bordering a major park, an urban planning model common on the continent where a localized fire can rapidly threaten a dense population and strain municipal emergency infrastructure.
The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation by forensic experts. Police initially stated the fire broke out on the eighth floor, though Bastiaens later indicated it started on the ground floor. Television broadcasts captured the severity of the smoke, showing at least one resident hanging over a balcony to find air before moving to a window.
Prime Minister Bart De Wever, a former mayor of Antwerp, addressed the disaster on social media. "My thoughts are with the victims and the evacuated residents of the terrible fire on Linkeroever," he wrote.
"My deep appreciation goes out to the emergency services who are striving to help the many affected people as quickly and safely as possible, and who are working hard to bring the fire under control," De Wever added. By early afternoon, the thick smoke had dissipated, though a large contingent of first responders remained at the site.
