IN PHOTOS: Why you might see a giant pink rabbit in the Vienna skyline

If you're in Vienna, look up. You could see a giant pink rabbit. Here's the story behind it, and a great offer for free entry into the Albertina museum this weekend.

Vienna is undoubtedly one of the great cities of art. So don't be surprised if you spot a large pink rabbit sculpture on a rooftop this summer.

The artwork, which has been created by German conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl, is a nod to the famous 'Young Hare' watercolour painting by German Renaissance painter Albrecht Dürer.

It has been displayed on the roof of Vienna's Albertina Museum for the museum's 250th anniversary.

The sculpture was lifted by crane onto the roof of the Albertina on July 1st. Standing at just over 2.5 meters tall and measuring 3.7 meters in length, the gigantic rabbit is made of plastic and weighs just over 100 kg.

This Hörl hare is not the first of its kind to take up a spot on the canopy. Back in 2014, a replica of the Dürer original by the German conceptual artist and sculptor, was placed there. However, the hare from back then measured only a fraction of the 2026 version.

The stunt is part of a special exhibition celebrating the founding of the museum 250 years ago called "Collecting for the Future". It runs until October 11th.

The Young Hare masterpiece by Albrecht Dürer, which he painted in 1502, is on display in the exhibition.

And on the anniversary weekend, from July 4th till July 5th, the Albertina is hosting an open house , with free admission at all three locations (the Albertina, the Albertian Modern and the Albertina Klosterneuburg).

On Saturday, July 4th, at 10am, Director General Ralph Gleis will cut a Sachertorte birthday cake, created specifically for the the 250th anniversary, on the Bastion terrace. Slices of the cake will be passed to visitors, while supplies last.

Another highlight takes place on Sunday, July 5th, at 2pm with a "Processional Paper Performance with Masks and Costumes" by visual artist Tone Fink. It will feature 70 participants wearing paper robes and masks designed by the artist. The group will walk from the Albertina to the Albertina Modern and back.

Expect workshops, dance performances and other community events over the weekend.
