England survive Azteca test to reach World Cup quarter-final

England secured a historic 3-2 victory over Mexico in a grueling World Cup knockout match at the Estadio Azteca, advancing to a decisive quarter-final against Norway.

England defeated Mexico 3-2 at the Estadio Azteca to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals, surviving more than 35 minutes with 10 men in torrential conditions. The victory marks England’s greatest overseas knockout win in the tournament's history. Thomas Tuchel’s side will now play Norway in Miami on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.

Jude Bellingham scored both of England's first-half goals, heading in a Bukayo Saka cross before adding a second after a counter-press. Harry Kane converted a penalty to extend the lead before Raúl Jiménez replied from the spot for Mexico. The match's trajectory shifted in the 53rd minute when Jarell Quansah received a red card for a reckless lunge.

For any European side, playing a host nation at the Azteca presents a severe test of physical and psychological resilience. Mexico had been unbeaten in their previous 10 World Cup matches at the venue, a stadium that holds profound historical weight in the sport. A delayed kick-off was preceded by heavy storms that flooded the surrounding streets, compounding the hostile environment.

England defended deeply in the closing stages, with Tuchel introducing Dan Burn, Djed Spence and John Stones to form a five-man defence. The team survived 11 minutes of added time, relying on a crucial backspin clearance from Spence and an earlier vital save from Jordan Pickford. The physical toll was significant, with Kane substituted from exhaustion and Jordan Henderson hospitalised while attempting to celebrate the final whistle.

“The players are exhausted to the next level and it is beautiful to see,” Tuchel said. The result keeps England on course in a tournament where the overall standard of competition has been notably thin. Overcoming the Azteca environment represents a significant milestone for a squad that must now regroup quickly to face Norway.
