Chelsea secure £34m profit as United buy Santos for £50m

Manchester United have agreed a £50m deal for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, a transfer that highlights Chelsea's need to sell assets to compensate for a lack of European football revenue while exposing United's struggle to navigate an inflated transfer market.

Manchester United have agreed to pay Chelsea £50m for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, with the player now cleared for a medical. The deal comprises an initial £48m fee with £2m in achievable add-ons, plus a 10% sell-on clause for the London club.

The purchase highlights the extreme inflation in the Premier League transfer market. United turned to Santos only after missing out on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who joined Tottenham for a guaranteed £85m, and abandoning a pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, which would have exceeded £110m. United’s recruitment team remained calm through these setbacks, but the escalating costs reflect a market where English clubs command premium fees for domestic talent.

United’s spending is driven by an acute operational shortage. Manuel Ugarte is sidelined long-term with cruciate knee ligament damage, while Kobbie Mainoo remains at the World Cup. With senior players returning for pre-season training on Thursday and a match against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July, United risked opening camp with only Mason Mount as a recognised senior midfielder in Michael Carrick's squad.

For Chelsea, the sale is a calculated piece of financial housekeeping. The club signed Santos from Vasco da Gama for £16m in 2023, guaranteeing a capital gain of roughly £34m. This profit margin is vital for a club that must navigate a summer without the broadcast and matchday revenues associated with European competition.

Player exits have consequently become an essential lever for balancing the books under new boss Xabi Alonso. Santos is the third significant departure of the window, following Marc Cucurella’s sale to Real Madrid and Tyrique George’s move to Everton. Defender Trevoh Chalobah, valued at around £35m, is also expected to depart, with Inter Milan the frontrunners for his signature.

Alonso is reshaping his midfield around Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, leaving the 22-year-old Santos seeking regular first-team football. Chelsea were willing to facilitate the exit despite previously rating the Brazilian highly, having opted against selling injury-prone alternatives Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo.

United are also finalising a £35m move for Ederson from Atalanta, pending his medical after Brazil's World Cup elimination. Together, the deals represent a rapid £85m outlay from United to resolve a squad deficit, while demonstrating how quickly English clubs monetise young assets when European football is absent.
