Chelsea sign £40m winger Quenda on contract until 2034
Chelsea have formalised the £40m acquisition of Geovany Quenda on a nine-year deal, a long-term asset investment that is already forcing the club to restructure its forward roster.
Chelsea have completed the £40m signing of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda on a contract running until 2034. The deal, originally agreed in March 2025, sees the Premier League club acquire one of Portuguese football's most valuable academy assets.
The transfer represents a significant long-term financial commitment that is already forcing structural changes to Chelsea's squad. Alejandro Garnacho has been put up for sale, and academy winger Jesse Derry is set to join Sporting, clearing both the roster space and the wage bill to accommodate the new arrival.
Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Quenda's role may extend beyond conventional wing play. Having utilised deeper wide players at Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso could deploy the teenager at wing-back, a tactical adjustment that would maximise the utility of the signing while managing his physical development.
Quenda arrives in London after a four-month absence due to a broken fifth metatarsal. Rather than remaining in Portugal, he completed much of his rehabilitation at Chelsea's Cobham training ground. He also attended matches at Stamford Bridge quietly, while taking biweekly English lessons and undergoing nutritional and strength work.
Born in Guinea-Bissau, Quenda moved to Portugal at age seven and rose through the ranks at Benfica before switching to Sporting in 2019. His progression underscores the intense market competition for young Portuguese talent, with former youth coach Fabio Roque noting a "non-aggression pact" between Benfica, Sporting and Porto that was broken when Quenda scored against Sporting.
His track record justifies the premium Chelsea paid. He became the youngest player to score in the Portuguese Super Cup on his debut against Porto and later surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo's record as the youngest goalscorer in Liga Portugal.
"Among players born in 2007, he is one of the best in the world, alongside Lamine Yamal and Estevao," Roque said. "My expectations are very high, but I know it is a long career."
Quenda has reported back for pre-season training early, ahead of his teammates. For Chelsea, securing a player labelled a "once-in-a-decade talent" by former coach Tiago Teixeira on a nine-year deal is a calculated gamble on future resale value and sporting capital.
