Czechia secures first all-national Grand Slam final at Wimbledon

Czechia secures first all-national Grand Slam final at Wimbledon

Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova will contest an unprecedented all-Czech Wimbledon final on Saturday, marking a historic milestone for European tennis after two dramatic semi-final victories.

Karolina Muchova defeated American Coco Gauff 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) on Thursday to set up a Saturday afternoon final against compatriot Linda Noskova. Noskova earlier secured her place by beating Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-4. The results guarantee the first all-Czech Grand Slam final in the sport's history.

The outcome is a landmark moment for Czech sport and European public life. It is the first time two women from the same nation have met in a major final since the 2017 US Open. Saturday's match will firmly place Czechia at the centre of the global sporting conversation.

Muchova's victory was a battle of attrition decided by a 10-point tie-break after neither player could force a break in the final set. Gauff fought back from a set down by increasing her groundstroke speed to win the second. In the tie-break, Muchova appeared to struggle with the heat but secured an early mini-break with a diving volley.

The drama peaked at 9-8 in the tie-break when Gauff earned match point on her own serve but failed with an attempted drop shot. "People who don't watch tennis are going to be like, 'why did you do that?'" Gauff said. Muchova then had her own match point saved by an outstanding passing forehand before sealing victory with aggressive hitting.

Noskova's path to the final was more straightforward but required equal patience. After a slow start to both sets, she capitalised on poor service games from Kostyuk. She broke in the 10th game of each set to secure a composed victory. "I tried to be as patient as possible and be cool," Noskova said.

Muchova, reaching her second Grand Slam final, described the semi-final as a rollercoaster. "In 10 seconds you had match point and then match point against you," she said. The final will determine which Czech player claims their first major title.
