Yungblud pulls out of Calgary show after public breakdown
British musician Yungblud has cancelled a headline Canadian festival appearance to return to the UK for mental health treatment, highlighting the mounting pressures artists face in the social media era.
British musician Yungblud has withdrawn from this weekend’s Cowboys Music Festival in Calgary after announcing he is taking time off in the UK to address his mental health. His management confirmed the cancellation, with the artist stating he is taking the situation "extremely seriously and facing head on what's going on for the good of the long term."
The decision follows a highly public emotional breakdown during his own Bludfest event in Hradec Králové, Czechia, last month. Footage of the singer sobbing on stage was posted online this week alongside a lengthy statement detailing his struggles with online harassment and persistent accusations of being an "industry plant."
For the European live music sector, the episode illustrates the mounting pressures placed on touring artists who must navigate relentless schedules alongside constant digital scrutiny. Yungblud explicitly linked his distress to the pace of the modern industry, writing that artists "never get to sit in what happens for more than a couple hours therefore you fail to navigate or process anything you feel."
Much of the recent online pressure stems from a public feud with former collaborator Machine Gun Kelly. Earlier this year, MGK mocked Yungblud on a track and in an Instagram comment, calling him a "silver spooned preachy wanker" and accusing him of using mental health as an excuse for poor ticket sales. Yungblud, who has been on a major label since his time on a Disney Channel show, pushed back against the narrative that his success was manufactured.
He pointed to the organic growth of Bludfest, which started in the UK two years ago and expanded to 20,000 fans in Czechia for its first international edition. While he received supportive messages from peers like SZA and Anthrax's Scott Ian, the backlash appears to have taken a tangible toll on his professional commitments.
Despite stepping back from the Calgary date, Yungblud still has several US shows on his calendar, including a stop at Lollapalooza in Chicago. His ability to fulfil those obligations will be closely watched by promoters balancing artist wellbeing with the financial realities of large-scale touring.
