Mbappé sends France into World Cup semi-finals

Mbappé sends France into World Cup semi-finals

France defeated Morocco to reach the World Cup semi-finals, guaranteeing European representation in the last four and preserving the continent's dominance in the sport's most commercially valuable tournament.

France have secured a place in the World Cup semi-finals by defeating Morocco, setting up a last-four tie against either Spain or Belgium in Dallas. Kylian Mbappé was the decisive figure, scoring a remarkable opening goal and providing the assist for Ousmane Dembélé to seal the victory.

Morocco arrived with a tactical setup designed to attack, but the sheer intensity of France's pressing quickly forced them into a rearguard action. By the end of the first half, France had amassed 13 chances. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was forced into action repeatedly, pushing away a Dayot Upamecano header and keeping out a low drive from Desiré Doué, while Lucas Digne struck the crossbar.

The breakthrough seemed inevitable but was temporarily delayed when France squandered a penalty. After Achraf Hakimi was dispossessed by Doué and Noussair Mazraoui tripped Mbappé in the area, a VAR check lasting three minutes and 10 seconds held up play. Bounou, saving a penalty outside of a shootout for his country for the first time, easily stopped Mbappé's limp effort to his left.

Morocco also made a forced change, bringing on Chemsdine Talbi for the injured Ismael Saibari and moving Bilal El Khannouss to the centre. The tactical shift did little to change the flow, as Jules Koundé regularly pushed forward from right-back. On the hour mark, Mbappé produced the moment of the match, receiving a ball from Digne in a crowded box and striking it at 98kph on a looping, unsaveable trajectory past Issa Diop.

For European public life and the continent's sporting economy, France's progression is a significant marker. Advancing to face another European side guarantees the continent will contest the final, shielding its commercial dominance in the global game. Sustained interest from deep runs by major European markets directly drives the broadcast revenues and sponsorship valuations that finance the wider football ecosystem.

The second goal arrived soon after Mbappé's opener, with Dembélé arcing a shot into the bottom corner after Mazraoui blocked Bounou's view. France ultimately eased to the finish, withdrawing Mbappé with 13 minutes remaining to keep him fresh for the next challenge. Like the West Germany side of 1990, Didier Deschamps' team has undeniable quality but has recently had to grind through the knockout phase, though their current form makes them heavy favourites to claim a third World Cup in 28 years.
