Man City beats Arsenal to sign Leicester winger Monga for £12.5m
Manchester City has acquired 17-year-old winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City for up to £12.5m, highlighting the escalating financial premiums placed on elite teenage talent in the English football market.
Manchester City have signed 17-year-old winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City on a five-year deal worth an initial £10m with add-ons, taking the total fee to £12.5m. Premier League champions Arsenal had been leading the race to sign the England youth international but were outmanoeuvred at the final stage by City.
The transfer underscores the escalating market value of elite teenage prospects in English football. While £12.5m is a substantial outlay for a 17-year-old, it fits an established trend of youth asset inflation. Tottenham paid £30m for 18-year-old Archie Gray in 2024, Manchester United spent £27m on an 18-year-old Luke Shaw twelve years ago, and Arsenal paid up to £12.5m for a 16-year-old Theo Walcott in 2006.
Leicester, who are relegated to League One, were forced to sell once Monga's one-year scholarship contract automatically converted into a professional deal on his 17th birthday on Friday. That conversion triggered the requirement for a transfer fee, with Brentford also having been in the frame before City clinched the agreement.
City's move was accelerated by their new manager, Enzo Maresca, who worked directly with Monga during his time in charge of Leicester. The acquisition represents a strategic blow to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, who believed a deal was close to completion.
Monga has already accumulated significant first-team experience, making 37 appearances for Leicester, including seven as a substitute in the Premier League. He became Leicester's youngest starter at 16 years and 34 days old and currently stands as the third-youngest player to feature in the Premier League, behind Arsenal duo Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri.
It remains to be seen whether Monga will be integrated immediately into City's first-team squad or begin in the academy. He could join the club's pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Seoul, alongside other young talents like Vitor Reis, Sverre Nypan and Divine Mukasa.
Those who have tracked his development highlight a player equipped for top-level pressure. Callum Powell of CP Coaching Academy, who worked with Monga from the age of 11, compared his mentality to Ivan Toney. "Jeremy is similar to Ivan, the mentality is just different to others," Powell said. "He is not fazed, he doesn't feel the pressure, in fact he is motivated by the pressure."
Powell noted that Monga's technical attributes—specifically his ability to manipulate the ball and dribble at high speed—set him apart from his peers. "For any young footballer, to become part of this amazing club is a dream come true," Monga said of the move, adding that City's track record with academy players like Phil Foden and Nico O'Reilly proved "the pathway is there."
