BBC Sport launches digital product overhaul to retain record World Cup traffic

The British public broadcaster is rolling out personalised app features and interactive content to convert record World Cup digital traffic into long-term audience retention as it transitions to domestic club football.

BBC Sport is rolling out a suite of digital product updates and personalised app features to retain the record online traffic generated during the World Cup. The British public broadcaster recorded massive audience numbers across its website and application during the tournament, driven by football alongside coverage of Wimbledon, Formula 1, and cricket.

To convert this temporary sports viewership into sustained engagement, the organisation is shifting its focus toward domestic club football and deploying new interactive tools. The strategy relies heavily on data monitoring and audience feedback to tailor the user experience, reflecting a broader trend among legacy media organisations to prioritise app-centric, personalised digital products.

Key additions include a new Shorts tab on the mobile application, which will host video content ranging from pundit analysis to fan reactions. Users can now set this short-form video section as their default tab, while a new weekly Predictor game and enhanced live pages with interactive elements aim to increase daily user stickiness. The broadcaster also tested live comments during certain matches and introduced new quiz formats, such as a "Who Am I?" game, to drive engagement.

The editorial strategy will pivot to comprehensive pre-season coverage and transfer market reporting across the Premier League, Women's Super League, and the English Football League. Senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel will lead transfer reporting, supported by dedicated club reporters covering teams across Britain and Ireland.

BBC Sport will also distribute video highlights for a wide array of European competitions, including the Champions League, La Liga, and the Bundesliga, alongside domestic leagues. Furthermore, the Scores & Fixtures pages are being upgraded to track matches across the entire football pyramid in real time. The integration of live video for the FA Cup and enhanced interactive elements on match day pages are designed to keep users on the platform longer.

The broadcaster is actively encouraging users to configure the My Sport personalisation tab to receive targeted content and lock screen notifications for Premier League score updates. This digital pivot underscores the pressure on public service media to continuously innovate their user interfaces and content delivery to compete in an increasingly fragmented European sports broadcasting market.
