Man Utd sign Santos and Tielemans for £83m to rebuild midfield
Manchester United have committed £83m to signing midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, a significant outlay aimed at repairing a depleted squad but one that still leaves a critical structural gap in the engine room.
Manchester United have confirmed the £48m acquisition of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and are finalising the arrival of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The Belgium international, 29, is set to undergo a medical ahead of a move that carries a reported £35m release clause. The twin signings follow the collapse of a £35m deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, an absence that had previously concerned supporters.
For a club seeking to compete on four fronts, the combined £83m outlay reflects an urgent need to rebuild squad depth. "If we want to compete in all four competitions we have to build a squad, not just a starting 11," said former midfielder Nicky Butt, who called the £35m fee for Tielemans "a phenomenal signing" by the recruitment team.
However, the spending does not entirely resolve the structural deficit left by Casemiro’s departure at the end of last season. United still lack a proven, experienced number six. While Santos operates in that defensive role, the 22-year-old has only 13 Premier League starts to his name. Tielemans is widely regarded as a number eight, the same position recently handed to Kobbie Mainoo. "I can't see Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo playing together," observed Paul Scholes, suggesting the club "might still need two in there."
There is a long-term asset risk tied to Tielemans’s accumulated mileage. He made his senior debut for Anderlecht at 16 and has now amassed 668 appearances for club and country, over 100 more than Casemiro had when he arrived from Real Madrid at age 30.
While Tielemans is better accustomed to the Premier League's physical demands, his recent injury record raises concerns. He missed the end of the World Cup with a warm-up injury and later suffered calf and ankle problems that restricted him to just 35 appearances for Aston Villa last season.
In a secondary transaction, United have signed goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a two-year contract with an option for a further season. The 35-year-old Wales international left Leeds United after his contract expired. "Leeds United can confirm Karl Darlow has left the club upon the expiration of his contract to pursue an opportunity elsewhere," the club stated. "Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge and leaves the Whites with the best wishes of everyone at Elland Road."
Darlow’s arrival is expected to trigger the exit of Turkey international Altay Bayindir, who nearly joined Besiktas in January. The veteran will serve as deputy to Senne Lammens and feature in pre-season, starting against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July.
"I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United," Darlow said. "I'm joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I'm really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands."
