Haaland prompts 91 baby namesakes in Peru after World Cup

The Manchester City striker's World Cup performances have translated into hundreds of Peruvian namesakes, underscoring the immense commercial and cultural reach of European football stars in distant markets.

Peru has registered 91 children with the full name Erling Haaland, while a further 468 Peruvians now bear the Norwegian striker's surname. The naming spike followed the Manchester City forward's standout performances at the 2026 World Cup.

Civil registry data shows registrations climbed steadily once the tournament began before surging after Norway's historic run to the quarter-finals. Haaland scored seven goals during the competition, including a decisive strike against Brazil in the knockout stage.

For the commercial machinery surrounding European football, these figures offer a quantifiable metric of global brand equity. Sponsorships and endorsements are typically priced on projected reach, but birth certificates provide hard evidence of how deeply an athlete's personal brand has penetrated a foreign consumer market.

The data demonstrates that top-tier players have successfully transitioned into highly valued cultural brands. When a name migrates from stadium chants to official civil registries, it signals a level of household recognition that traditional advertising struggles to achieve, creating a permanent form of visibility.

Haaland's pulling power is striking given the scant footballing tradition linking Norway and Peru. Yet the forward remains behind the continent's established commercial giants in this specific market. Neymar leads with 33,809 namesakes, making it the most popular given name of footballing origin in the country.

Lionel Messi accounts for 3,402 namesakes, 292 of whom are officially registered as Lionel Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo has 1,185. Spain's young prodigy Lamine Yamal has already prompted 1,241 Peruvians to adopt his surname as a first name, suggesting a rapid cycle of brand formation for emerging European talent.

Iván Torres, a spokesman for Peru's National Registry of Identification and Civil Status, told Televisión Panamericana that football stars consistently set naming trends. "Haaland is Peruvian too," he joked. The remark summarises how a memorable World Cup performance can project a European athlete into the daily lives of consumers thousands of kilometres away.
