Iron Maiden sells music and likeness rights to Pophouse
The Swedish company behind the ABBA Voyage show has acquired a stake in Iron Maiden’s music and image rights, signalling further consolidation in the European heritage entertainment market.
Iron Maiden has sold a stake in its publishing and master music rights, alongside its name, image, and likeness rights, to Swedish entertainment group Pophouse. The deal grants the Stockholm-based firm a significant share of one of Europe's most enduring rock brands.
Pophouse is the founding investor and creative force behind the lucrative ABBA Voyage virtual concert in London. By acquiring this new stake, the company is expanding its portfolio of European intellectual property beyond pop into heavy metal. The transaction provides Iron Maiden with the capital to finance ambitious creative ventures over the next decade.
For the band, the partnership represents a strategic push to transform a decades-old music catalogue into a broader commercial ecosystem. Management indicated the new financial backing will accelerate existing projects, specifically citing the development of the "Infinite Dreams Museum" and the filming of the band's current live show.
The agreement highlights how legacy acts are pivoting away from relying solely on record sales and traditional touring. Iron Maiden has already diversified its revenue streams through an award-winning mobile game, a global fan club, a drinks business, books, and extensive merchandising.
“Rod and Andy [Taylor, joint CEOs of Phantom Music] have always encouraged and inspired us to take chances in developing Eddie and the worlds he inhabits, such as horror, gaming, or comic books," said Dave Shack, Managing Director of Phantom Music and Iron Maiden co-manager. “It’s absolutely one of the greatest sandpits for a creative to play in – and Pophouse have already shown they belong in it.”
For investors and the wider entertainment sector, the transaction underscores the enduring financial value of established European intellectual property. By pairing Pophouse’s expertise in virtual productions with Iron Maiden’s established brand, the deal points to a future where heritage music acts function as diversified media companies.
