Bournemouth invest £25.7m in striker Alvaro Rodriguez ahead of Europa League campaign
The Premier League club has secured the 22-year-old forward on a five-year deal from Elche, signaling serious financial commitment to their maiden European campaign.
Bournemouth has completed the signing of striker Alvaro Rodriguez from Spanish side Elche in a transfer valued at up to £25.7m. The 22-year-old has committed to a five-year contract at the Vitality Stadium, with the announcement coinciding with his birthday.
This acquisition underscores the club’s financial ambition as they prepare for their first-ever season in European competition. Qualifying for the Europa League has prompted the Cherries to bolster their attacking options, adding necessary depth and physicality to a forward line that already includes Evanilson.
New manager Marco Rose had identified Rodriguez as a primary target prior to his arrival. The club views this addition as a strategic expansion of their squad rather than a direct replacement for teenage forward Junior Kroupi, who remains linked with a departure.
The structure of the deal highlights the intricate financial mechanisms of modern football transfers. Real Madrid, who sold the Uruguay youth international to Elche last summer, will receive 50 per cent of any future transfer fee generated by the player.
Rodriguez arrives with a solid track record in Spanish football. During the previous La Liga campaign, he registered seven goals and provided five assists across 34 appearances, while also maintaining eligibility to represent Spain at the international level.
Speaking on his arrival, Rodriguez described the move as a lifelong ambition realised. "It is a great privilege to be here," he stated. "I have always wanted to play in the Premier League and now, on my birthday, I can make that dream a reality."
He noted that the opportunity was a dream since childhood, expressing disbelief when his agent first conveyed the club’s interest. "Everything I have experienced so far is important for this next chapter and I want to keep improving here," he added.
To balance the squad, Bournemouth is actively looking to sell Turkey striker Enes Unal. This outgoing movement will help offset the significant capital deployed to secure Rodriguez for their historic European venture.
