Record £850k Malard transfer highlights WSL's growing financial power
Chelsea’s impending club-record signing of Melvine Malard underscores the Women’s Super League’s emergence as a high-value market where English clubs are rigorously protecting player assets.
Chelsea is finalising a deal to sign French forward Melvine Malard from Manchester United for a fee approaching £850,000. The transfer, which is in its final stages, would represent a club-record sale for United.
The willingness to pay such a sum marks a notable escalation in the women's game's financial maturation. With player valuations rising, United executed a rational asset-management strategy: monetise a high-performing player now rather than absorb a total loss on a free transfer when her contract expires next summer. Manager Marc Skinner’s side plans to immediately reinvest the capital before the transfer window closes on 3 September.
Malard, 26, justified her market value by scoring four Champions League goals to propel United to a maiden European quarter-final, alongside six Women's Super League strikes in 18 starts. She also featured for France at Euro 2025.
For Chelsea, the acquisition pairs Malard with a newly contracted Aggie Beever-Jones to solidify their attacking options. The London club tracked the former Lyon player extensively, with manager Sonia Bompastor’s decade-long relationship with Malard acting as a decisive factor. Bompastor originally convinced Malard to leave the island of Réunion for Lyon as a youngster.
English clubs draw European talent
The WSL's financial pull continues to attract young international talent. Arsenal have signed 19-year-old Germany youth international Lisa Baum from RB Leipzig. Born in Tanzania, Baum moved to Germany at age four and cited the league's competitive standard as her primary motivation.
Everton have also capitalised on market movements, securing France under-23 forward Noémie Mouchon on a free transfer following Leicester City’s relegation. The 23-year-old turned down other suitors to join the Merseyside club.
“I am a fast player and I love to score goals, so I can’t wait. I just want to score a lot with Everton. That’s my only objective,” Mouchon said. Everton technical director Nick Cox noted that her talent attracted multiple bids, stating she was “keen to sign for Everton and help us to progress.”
