Celtic's McGregor opts to stay despite Saudi agency switch

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has signalled his intention to remain at the club, offering a measure of stability amid ongoing Saudi Pro League investment in European talent.

Callum McGregor has dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia, stating his intention to help Martin O'Neill "build something special" at Celtic. The 33-year-old midfielder's comments come despite a recent change of agency that tied him to representatives of Brendan Rodgers, the former Celtic manager now coaching Saudi side Al Qadsiah.

The situation highlights the ongoing tension between European clubs and the financial pull of the Saudi Pro League. O'Neill, who returned to guide Celtic to a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double last season, openly acknowledged the economic reality of the situation. "Money is a big thing, particularly when you're past 30," the manager said, though he noted McGregor "hasn't hinted to me he wants to leave."

McGregor's potential departure would have represented a significant loss for Celtic as they prepare for European competition. He is not the only established first-team player facing uncertainty, with Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels and Reo Hatate also the subject of transfer speculation. So far, the club's only squad addition ahead of the new campaign is forward Camilo Duran, who scored on his debut in a 4-1 friendly loss to Sporting CP.

For McGregor, the motivation to stay is rooted in maintaining the club's high competitive standards. Having lifted his 26th major trophy last season, the captain argued that sustained success requires continuous effort. "We have set ourselves an unbelievable standard over the last 14 or 15 years," he told club media, adding that winning brings "bigger expectations" and a "bigger target on your back."

Retaining his experience will be central to O'Neill's efforts to push the club forward in European football. McGregor praised the manager and his staff for taking on the challenge of a second spell at Celtic, noting their shared appetite for difficulty. "They like a challenge, they face it head on," McGregor said. "That's exactly the way I am as well as a player and a person."
