United spend £85m rebuilding midfield as Villa lose Tielemans
Manchester United have committed £85m to overhauling their midfield by signing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, leaving Aston Villa with a significant asset depletion just weeks after winning the Europa League.
Manchester United have confirmed the £35m signing of midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on a five-year contract. The arrival of the 29-year-old Belgian international follows Monday’s £48m acquisition of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, which includes a potential £2m in add-ons.
Tielemans brings immediate proven value after scoring Villa’s opening goal in their 3-0 Europa League final victory over Freiburg in Istanbul in May. His underlying metrics from last season were elite, as he broke the most defensive lines per 100 passes of any Premier League midfielder or attacker. He also ranked second for line-breaking passes under pressure while contributing seven assists.
For Villa, the sale represents a considerable loss of on-pitch capital. This asset depletion is compounded by the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained by Amadou Onana at the World Cup on Friday. Losing a leader who also captains Belgium leaves a significant gap in a squad that will compete in the Champions League next season, potentially impacting their ability to generate future matchday and broadcast revenue through deep European runs.
Villa have moved to bolster their commercial operations by announcing Visit Rwanda as their new front-of-shirt sponsor. The tourism partnership previously belonged to Arsenal but attracted scrutiny due to Rwanda’s backing of the M23 militia in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo.
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, highlighted the acquisition as a move to add "composure, creativity and leadership" to a squad aiming to challenge for major honours. Tielemans, who has 90 caps, said the club’s ambition to "push for the biggest trophies" was clear.
United also added depth in goal by signing 35-year-old Karl Darlow on a free transfer following his release by Leeds in June. He will provide competition for the first-choice goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.
