Bournemouth targets Benfica's Silva after £200m sell-off
English Premier League side Bournemouth is negotiating to sign Benfica defender Antonio Silva, a move that signals a strategic shift from last year's £200m player fire sale to a period of financial and squad stability under new manager Marco Rose.
Bournemouth are in negotiations with Benfica to sign Portuguese defender Antonio Silva. The proposed transfer is specifically designed to replace Marcos Senesi, who recently departed the club on a free transfer to join Tottenham Hotspur. Losing a starting centre-back without a fee represents a significant financial setback.
However, this transfer pursuit highlights a broader shift in strategy for the Premier League side. After offloading more than £200m worth of players last year, the club's ownership is now actively seeking a summer of squad stability.
A core component of this new financial approach involves protecting existing assets. Bournemouth's management is determined to resist incoming transfer offers for three of their most important players: Alex Scott, Rayan, and Junior Kroupi.
Retaining this group is a clear priority for new manager Marco Rose, who has been tasked with rebuilding the team. Securing Silva would provide Rose with a ball-playing centre-back to directly fill the defensive void left by the Argentine international.
The potential deal demonstrates a continued willingness to invest in the playing squad. Silva would become Bournemouth's second signing of the summer window, following the earlier arrival of striker Alvaro Rodriguez from Elche in a transfer worth up to £25.7m.
Despite Bournemouth's readiness to do business, the negotiations have currently reached a standstill. Benfica have paused any further progression in the transfer talks as they turn their full attention to their upcoming European commitments.
The Portuguese club must successfully navigate the Europa League qualifying rounds before finalising outgoing player sales. Benfica are scheduled to face Swiss side St Gallen in Switzerland on 23 July, with the decisive return leg taking place a week later in Lisbon.
For Benfica, Silva is a proven and highly valued asset. The 22-year-old has been a first-team regular since breaking into the squad in 2022, accumulating valuable experience across the Champions League, Europa League, and Club World Cup.
His market value is further underpinned by his international pedigree, boasting 20 caps for Portugal. While he was part of the national squads for the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, he was ultimately not selected by manager Roberto Martinez for the final tournament squad this summer.
