Barcelona and Atletico deadlock over €130m Alvarez valuation amid Arsenal interest
A bitter corporate standoff between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid over a potential €130m transfer of Julian Alvarez has opened the door for Arsenal to negotiate for the striker and a record-breaking £34m alternative.
Barcelona has a bid of just over £100m on the table for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, with president Joan Laporta indicating the club may raise its offer to more than £110m (€130m) plus bonuses after the World Cup. Atletico CEO Miguel Gil Marin has firmly rejected the approach, accusing Barcelona of "disrespecting us" as a very public feud escalates between the rival clubs. Real Madrid previously saw a £130m (€150m) bid for the Argentina international rejected earlier this summer.
This corporate deadlock highlights the acute asset-replacement risk currently dictating the upper end of European football's transfer market. Laporta publicly attributed Atletico's refusal to sell solely to the difficulty of sourcing a successor. "I spoke with Gil Marin. He told me they were not planning to let him go, but the offer is firm and we stand by it," Laporta said. "Atletico said no because they didn't have a replacement. If they get one, we will see."
Despite Laporta's confidence, the collapse in relations between the two Spanish boards—fuelled by a recent social media spat—effectively freezes a major capital movement in the sector. Barcelona has not yet decided whether to formally increase its offer, and Atletico is almost certain to maintain its refusal regardless of the final figure. The standoff leaves Alvarez's future in limbo as he prepares to return to pre-season training at the Metropolitano.
Arsenal is attempting to capitalise on this impasse by leveraging existing corporate links. Sporting director Andrea Berta, who held the same role at Atletico until moving to the Emirates last year, has facilitated initial ownership-level discussions between the clubs. While Atletico publicly refuses to sell, sources indicate the club would be much more receptive to a deal with Arsenal or PSG if Alvarez ultimately demands an exit.
Overcoming the player's own preferences represents a significant hurdle for Arsenal's management team. Alvarez reportedly views a move to Barcelona as his ultimate ambition, and his family's desire to continue living in Spain is a major factor. The striker is currently on holiday following his World Cup campaign but is expected to hold definitive talks with Atletico's hierarchy about his future upon his return.
In parallel, Arsenal is advancing a separate transfer strategy to replace Leandro Trossard, who is completing a £17m move to Besiktas in Turkey. The club has identified Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis as a primary replacement target and has explored the conditions of a potential deal, though no club-to-club contact has yet occurred. Securing Tzolis would require a fee of around £34m, a figure that would shatter the Belgian Pro League's transfer record. Arsenal is also keeping Morgan Rogers on its radar.
