Sunderland sign experienced Belgium defender Thomas Meunier on two-year deal

Sunderland have secured the signature of 34-year-old Belgian international Thomas Meunier on a two-year contract, signaling the club’s strategic intent as it prepares for its first European campaign in over half a century.

Sunderland have secured Belgian defender Thomas Meunier on a two-year contract after his departure from French club Lille. The 34-year-old becomes the first new arrival for the club this season.

This addition follows the recent departures of forward Eliezer Mayenda and midfielder Dan Neil. It marks a calculated shift in the squad’s composition as the new campaign approaches.

Meunier brings extensive top-flight pedigree to the north-east of England. His career includes over 550 senior club appearances, featuring tenures at Club Brugge, Paris St-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Trabzonspor.

During his time in France, he won three league titles with Paris St-Germain. Internationally, he has earned 83 caps and represented Belgium at the 2026 World Cup.

European Ambition

The acquisition carries significant weight for Sunderland’s broader sporting and economic project. The club is preparing to compete in European football for the first time in 53 years, requiring a higher caliber of squad depth. This return to the continental stage also presents new commercial and broadcasting opportunities for the organization.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi emphasized the strategic value of the recruitment. He stated the club was "delighted to welcome Thomas" after sensing a "very positive feeling" during early discussions.

Ghisolfi noted that Meunier brings "a wealth of experience, leadership and professionalism" to the organization. He expects the defender’s character to exert a constructive influence across the entire squad.

Meunier will link up with his new teammates in early August. He described the Premier League as a highly competitive environment, calling it "a challenge I've wanted to experience."

The veteran defender noted he was impressed by the club's ambition and forward-looking project. He aims to leverage his background to help the team "compete for trophies" in both domestic and continental fixtures.
