Coventry City nears £17m deal for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda

The newly promoted Premier League club is investing heavily in its defence to prepare for its first top-flight campaign in a quarter of a century.

Coventry City is finalising an agreement worth over £17m to secure the services of Switzerland international Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt. The centre-back is expected to commit to a four-year contract with the newly promoted Premier League side.

The transfer structure includes an initial payment of £15.4m, with an additional £1.7m contingent on performance-related add-ons. This level of expenditure highlights the substantial capital investment now required for clubs stepping up to England’s top football division.

Securing established talent is a critical financial and sporting priority for Coventry as they prepare for their first top-flight campaign in 25 years. The club’s hierarchy has demonstrated its commitment by renewing manager Frank Lampard’s contract this summer to lead this transitional phase.

Amenda was reportedly convinced to make the move following direct engagement from Lampard and the club’s recruitment team. He brings international pedigree, having been named in the Switzerland squad that reached the World Cup quarter-finals, even though he did not make a tournament appearance.

The Swiss defender will become Coventry’s third major acquisition of the summer transfer window as the squad is rebuilt for higher competition. The club has already secured winger Loum Tchaouna from Burnley and made midfielder Frank Onyeka’s move from Brentford permanent.

Defensive reinforcements remain a strict priority, with the club still actively pursuing Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. Negotiations have so far been unable to yield an agreement, prompting Coventry to monitor Chelsea’s Filip Jorgensen as a viable alternative target.

On the pitch, the team is currently undergoing pre-season preparations to gauge readiness for the elevated competition level. Their pre-season began with a 3-2 behind-closed-doors friendly defeat by Wimbledon, highlighting the work still required.

Upcoming fixtures against Northampton Town and Espanyol will provide the management team with further assessment opportunities. These matches are crucial for finalising tactical setups before the demanding Premier League schedule begins.
