New UK-Swiss trade deal targets services and business mobility

New UK-Swiss trade deal targets services and business mobility

Switzerland and the UK have concluded negotiations on a sweeping free trade agreement that modernises bilateral economic ties outside the EU by prioritising services, digital trade, and cross-border worker mobility.

Switzerland and Britain have finished negotiating a new free trade agreement, replacing a basic post-Brexit deal that took effect in 2021. The Swiss economic affairs ministry confirmed the conclusion of talks on Monday, noting the pact places bilateral economic relations on a modern footing.

The agreement is heavily tailored toward the services sector, representing a significant shift from traditional commodity-focused trade pacts. British Trade Secretary Peter Kyle described it as "the most significant services trade deal the UK has ever negotiated." UK estimates project the framework will generate £5.2 billion, or roughly 5.64 billion francs, annually in additional British services exports to Switzerland.

Beyond services, the deal broadens the legal architecture governing bilateral commerce. The Swiss ministry stated the agreement "safeguards existing preferential arrangements in trade in goods and provides for targeted improvements to market access." It also establishes new rules for financial services, telecommunications, public procurement, intellectual property, and digital trade. For companies in both nations, the ministry added, the primary economic benefit will be strengthened "legal certainty".

A core component of the pact is the relaxation of rules around the movement of professionals. "UK services professionals will be able to deliver their services visa-free for up to 90 days a year to Switzerland," according to the UK government. Furthermore, British companies can transfer employees from UK offices to Swiss branches for up to five years "without being subject to stringent economic needs tests." The agreement creates a reciprocal route allowing UK firms to bring in Swiss workers for up to three months at short notice.

The deal also carries practical benefits for individuals crossing between the two countries. "Switzerland have announced that UK nationals will soon be able to use eGates at Swiss borders, in line with Schengen requirements," a UK government document states. British travellers will be able to exit via e-gates at Zurich Airport by the end of 2026, with entry expansions planned for Geneva and Basel. Additionally, the two governments intend to eliminate mobile roaming surcharges, allowing UK visitors to use existing phone contracts without extra fees.

The agreement still requires final legal formalities before it can be officially signed. Switzerland indicated the pact could be fully enacted into law by the end of 2026. Once ratified, it will serve as a new template for how non-EU European economies integrate their highly developed services markets.
