United eye £30m Summerville as £17.5m Rashford wage blocks exit

Manchester United are preparing a £30m move for West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville as the club struggles to find a buyer capable of absorbing Marcus Rashford’s £17.5m annual salary.

Manchester United have identified West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville as their primary replacement for Marcus Rashford, with a £30m transfer fee expected. The 24-year-old Dutch international, who was part of his country’s World Cup campaign, fits the specific profile of a left-sided forward that United would require should they finally sever ties with Rashford.

Offloading Rashford, however, remains a significant financial hurdle for the club. The 28-year-old still has two years remaining on a contract that pays him £17.5m annually. United’s hierarchy would prefer to execute a permanent sale or secure another loan, but the primary difficulty is identifying a buyer capable of absorbing such substantial wage commitments.

This impasse follows a complete breakdown in the relationship between Rashford and United. The England international spent the first half of 2025 on a six-month loan at Aston Villa before completing a subsequent temporary move to Barcelona for all of last season. An uneasy truce has since formed, meaning Rashford is anticipated to begin the upcoming season at Old Trafford despite the mutual desire for a separation.

For West Ham, the dynamic is driven entirely by their sudden drop into the Championship. Relegation has forced the club to adopt a pragmatic approach to its squad, making them open to selling Summerville if a suitable offer arrives. Because the winger still has three years left on his current contract, West Ham are in a strong position to command the £30m fee being discussed.

The Summerville situation illustrates the broader financial tightrope United are walking in the current window. The club has already committed an initial £82m this week to sign midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. That spending has not extinguished their desire to reinforce the centre of the pitch further.

Manager Michael Carrick is known to admire Roma’s Manu Koné, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, and Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga. Yet United have concluded that a move for any of these three players is highly unlikely. The asking price for each midfielder sits in the £60m to £80m range, a valuation the club simply cannot justify after this week's outlay.
