Bellingham risks bronze match ban after post-match clash with Barco
Jude Bellingham faces a potential FIFA suspension for Saturday's World Cup bronze match against France after slapping Argentina's Valentin Barco following England's semi-final defeat.
Jude Bellingham faces a potential suspension from FIFA ahead of Saturday’s World Cup bronze medal match against France. The England midfielder struck Argentina substitute Valentin Barco on the back of the head following his side's 2-1 semi-final defeat in Atlanta.
The incident occurred at full-time when Barco, who did not play, entered the pitch to embrace teammates near Bellingham. The 23-year-old walked over and slapped him, prompting a brief melee between both sets of players.
Footage indicates the clash stemmed from Barco running onto the pitch to celebrate Enzo Fernández’s 85th-minute equaliser directly in front of the England bench. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, labelled the celebration "probably the worst example of sportsmanship we've seen at this World Cup."
FIFA’s disciplinary committee will now review the footage. A violent conduct charge would rule Bellingham out of the France match in Miami. However, the governing body is likely to treat the slap as petulant rather than violent, as the laws of the game stipulate that deliberately striking an opponent's head with negligible force does not constitute a red-card offence.
The match was a fractious affair, with American referee Ismail Elfath struggling to control 19 first-half fouls. Bellingham, who has scored six goals in the tournament, was also involved in an earlier confrontation with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the fourth minute.
"We were really just discussing a foul, actually," Bellingham said afterwards. "It wasn't anything bad. I'm sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal, but it was nothing."
England had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon early in the second half before Lautaro Martínez headed the winner in stoppage time. For Barco, the incident concludes a tournament where the 21-year-old made just one appearance, as a second-half substitute in a 3-1 group win against Jordan. The defender currently plays for French side Strasbourg, having previously had a spell at Brighton, and is expected to join Chelsea.
