Scottish goalkeeper Craig Gordon retires after 25-year career
Craig Gordon, who once set a British transfer record for a goalkeeper, has ended a 25-year professional career marked by severe injuries and domestic dominance.
Goalkeeper Craig Gordon has retired from professional football. His 25-year playing career spanned 766 first-team appearances and 84 international caps for Scotland.
His journey included 13 games on loan at Cowdenbeath during the 2001-02 season. He eventually became a central figure in Scottish football, representing his boyhood club Heart of Midlothian across two separate spells.
From a market perspective, Gordon's career featured a landmark financial transaction. In 2007, he transferred from Hearts to Sunderland for £9 million. This fee set a British record for a goalkeeper at the time, reflecting the premium placed on domestic talent in the Premier League market.
His time in English football produced memorable moments, including a famous close-range save against Bolton Wanderers' Zat Knight in 2010. However, a serious knee injury disrupted his five-year tenure at the Stadium of Light. The injury forced him into a two-year period of rehabilitation and coaching.
Gordon's ability to return from such a significant setback highlights the physical demands and resilience required in modern professional sports. He resumed his career at Celtic in 2014, winning five Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups, and five League Cups.
He returned to Hearts in 2020, adding a Scottish Championship medal in 2021. Even a double leg break in 2022 could not end his career, as he successfully rehabilitated to return to the pitch. Across his club career, he kept a clean sheet in roughly two-thirds of his appearances.
"I've never wanted it to end, but end it must," Gordon said in a video released by Hearts. "I have lived my dreams and for that, I'm so thankful."
His final club match came in a 2-2 draw against Celtic in January. His last international appearance was a pre-World Cup win over Curacao in May.
The 43-year-old will bid farewell to fans at a friendly against Rayo Vallecano on Friday. "The gloves are finally off and I bid farewell to my playing career," Gordon said. "You, the fans, have given me everything, and it has been a privilege to represent you."
