Winkleman ends BBC talk show after single series

The television presenter is stepping down from her Friday night programme after just one series, leaving Graham Norton's production company without a spring flagship.

Claudia Winkleman is stepping down from her BBC chat show after a single series. The programme, which aired for seven weeks this spring, failed to secure a long-term place in the broadcaster's schedule.

The departure leaves a notable gap in the BBC's Friday night lineup and deals a strategic setback to So Television. The production company, co-founded by Graham Norton, had effectively swapped its founder's spring episodes for Winkleman's programme after Norton reduced his output in 2022 to focus on an autumn and winter run. With Winkleman stepping away, So Television now loses its hold on that valuable spring slot.

Audience figures suggest the format struggled to establish a dominant position in a competitive market. Most episodes attracted a combined audience of between 1.5 million and 2 million viewers. The series also divided critics, with some praising its conversational "banter" while others dismissed it as "messy" and "a bit of a bore."

Winkleman cited personal discomfort rather than commercial performance as the reason for ending the show. "Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it," she said. During its run, she interviewed high-profile figures including Lisa Kudrow, Jeff Goldblum, Ralph Fiennes, James McAvoy, Jamie Dornan, Vanessa Williams, Niall Horan, Rachel Zegler and Josh Widdicombe.

The BBC accepted the decision while emphasising the presenter's ongoing value to the network. "Claudia's warmth and quick wit made The Claudia Winkleman Show an absolute joy," said Ed Havard, director of entertainment at the BBC. "Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision and would like to thank Claudia and the brilliant team at So Television for bringing the series to screen."

Winkleman, who stepped down from Strictly Come Dancing last year, will continue to front The Traitors. She remains a central asset for the public broadcaster as it navigates a shifting entertainment landscape. "As the host of the country's most-watched show, Claudia will be back on the BBC very soon when The Celebrity Traitors returns later this year," Havard added.
