Arsenal pays record £34m for Tzolis in Belgian league transfer milestone
Arsenal has agreed to pay a Belgian Pro League record £34m for winger Christos Tzolis, underlining the rising market value of top-tier Belgian exports.
Arsenal have agreed a £34m fee with Club Brugge for Greek winger Christos Tzolis, a transfer that sets a new record for the Belgian Pro League. The 24-year-old arrives as a direct replacement for Leandro Trossard, who was sold to Besiktas for £17m this week. The move is reported to be independent of Arsenal’s continued pursuit of Morgan Rogers.
The record fee highlights the escalating financial returns available to Belgian clubs that develop and sell elite talent. For Arsenal, the deal represents a calculated squad investment, spending double the amount recouped for Trossard to acquire a highly productive 24-year-old. Once Tzolis learned of Arsenal's interest, he made the Premier League champions his only destination.
Last season, Tzolis registered 17 goals and 23 assists in 36 league appearances for Club Brugge. His statistical output significantly overshadows the departing Trossard, offering Arsenal a high-yield attacking asset. The Greek international operates primarily on the left but is also deployed as a central number 10, a versatility that attracted strong interest from Crystal Palace last summer as a replacement for Eberechi Eze.
From an asset-management perspective, Tzolis offers notable durability, having missed a maximum of just two matches at a time during his spell in Belgium. "He's a guy that works a lot," said Hayk Milkon, who was Club Brugge's assistant manager until February. "He runs a lot of kilometres in the game, but also at high speeds and his sprint distance."
Milkon highlighted Tzolis's capacity to sustain this output across a congested European schedule. "Anyone can do that once in a week. He was doing it every three or four days with the Champions League. And his performances stayed stable."
Tactical flexibility remains a core strength of the signing. "He's able to fulfil different roles," Milkon noted. "Coming from the left side - giving him this space to start wide and then find the moments to get more inside - that's where he's at his strongest."
The primary risk factor for Arsenal is the player's temperament, a trait he shares with his predecessor. Arteta affectionately called Trossard "a bit of a moaner" for his constant complaints in training and to referees. When asked about Tzolis's areas for improvement, Milkon pointed directly to "emotional stability".
