Motherwell fined £5,000 over VAR criticism as transfer looms

Motherwell fined £5,000 over VAR criticism as transfer looms

A £5,000 regulatory fine and a four-match ban for Motherwell's Elliot Watt highlight the financial and operational risks Scottish clubs face when challenging refereeing governance.

Motherwell have been fined £5,000 and their midfielder Elliot Watt handed an immediate four-match suspension after admitting to breaching the Scottish FA’s disciplinary rules. The sanctions follow social media posts criticising a VAR decision during a 3-2 defeat to Celtic in May.

The governing body charged both the club and the player under rule 72, which prohibits comments that criticise match officials or impinge on their character. Watt, 26, described a late penalty award on X as "the worst VAR decision in history". The club simultaneously posted a video stating: "As the world of football mocks our game, we simply have to draw a line in the sand and shift the focus."

For a club operating outside the lucrative upper echelons of European football, such regulatory penalties represent an avoidable financial strain. Motherwell stated: "The club are extremely disappointed at the outcome of today's hearing in relation to the Scottish FA's notice of complaint received by the club." They confirmed they will request the written reasons and "thereafter we will liaise with our external solicitors on any next steps."

The domestic ban also disrupts the marketability of one of the club's key assets. Watt, who was voted into the Premiership's PFA team of the year last season, is the subject of reported transfer interest from the Turkish club Samsunspor. Any prospective deal must now factor in that Watt will miss five domestic matches, combining this new suspension with a two-yellow-card dismissal against Hibernian on the final day of last season.

European competition offers a partial reprieve for the club's immediate squad planning. Watt will be available for Motherwell's Conference League qualifying rounds against Faroese side Havnar Boltfelag on 23 and 30 July.

The SFA is prioritising strict enforcement of its governance framework regarding public criticism of match officials. Head of refereeing Willie Collum explicitly backed the original penalty decision in a subsequent review. The regulatory crackdown extends beyond Motherwell, with then-Hearts head coach Derek McInnes cited for calling the same incident "disgusting". His hearing is scheduled for 22 July.
