Wales forward Hannah Cain returns to Everton following Leicester relegation

The 27-year-old striker’s return to Merseyside highlights the growing infrastructural ambitions of women’s football as Everton integrates its female squad into the historic Goodison Park.

Wales forward Hannah Cain has re-signed with Everton following the expiration of her contract with Leicester City. The 27-year-old striker returns to Merseyside after Leicester’s relegation from the Women’s Super League in June.

Cain originally signed her first professional contract with the Toffees in July 2018. She spent two years with the club before making the move to the Foxes, making this a notable homecoming for the forward.

Her international record adds significant profile and experience to the Everton squad. Capped 26 times by Wales, she scored the decisive goal against the Republic of Ireland that secured the women’s national team’s first major tournament appearance. She also found the net against England at the 2025 European Championships.

Beyond the sporting acquisition, the move underscores a broader shift in the infrastructure and commercial presentation of women’s football in Europe. Cain will now play her home matches at Goodison Park, marking a substantial upgrade in facilities and visibility for the club’s female players.

The striker noted that this transition reflects the sport's rapid institutional development. "Having Goodison as our home shows how far the game has come," Cain said. She recalled that when she first signed her professional deal, the team played outside the city, contrasting it with the historic venue they now occupy.

Integrating the women’s team into a major traditional stadium serves as a clear strategic signal for the club's long-term investment. Cain emphasized the tangible impact of the fan base, noting the incredible atmosphere during her appearances at the venue at the end of last season.

For Everton, securing a player with Cain’s experience provides roster stability. It also reinforces their commitment to leveraging historic club infrastructure to support the continued growth of their women’s side.
