Google rebrands NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook with new data tools
Google is rebranding its AI research tool NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook and adding interactive data analysis capabilities, a move that deepens its hold on enterprise users and solidifies the Gemini brand.
Google has renamed its artificial intelligence research tool, NotebookLM, to Gemini Notebook. The change reflects a deliberate strategy by the company to phase out experimental names and consolidate its AI portfolio under the single Gemini brand.
The rebrand coincides with a significant technical update. Google is introducing code execution capabilities that transform each notebook into its own secure container. Within this environment, users can generate code to perform complex data analysis, drawing from multiple uploaded sources without leaving the platform.
This expansion into interactive data processing elevates the tool beyond basic text summarisation. For corporate users, particularly those handling sensitive information, the secure container model offers a dedicated workspace that could rival traditional business intelligence software.
The platform has accumulated a substantial user base since its introduction as Project Tailwind at Google I/O in 2023. It now serves 30 million individuals and more than 600,000 organizations globally. This rapid adoption underscores the growing corporate demand for tools that can process proprietary documents and datasets using large language models.
NotebookLM has already proven its ability to shape the broader AI sector. Over the last three years, Google introduced features like automated podcast generation from source material, curated notebooks, video overviews, and an enterprise plan. These additions forced competing startups and technology companies to develop similar capabilities to keep pace.
Access to the new code execution feature is tiered. It is immediately available to subscribers of the Google AI Ultra paid plan, as well as Workspace business customers who have AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. Pro users will gain access in the coming weeks, a rollout strategy that incentivises upgrades to higher-tier corporate subscriptions.
Google is also tightening the integration of these notebooks across its product ecosystem. Users can already access their notebooks within the primary Gemini application. Soon, the company will make them available through AI Mode in search, ensuring that corporate research and data analysis remain tightly woven into the daily workflows of its business customers.
