Wrexham face Man Utd in Helsinki ahead of US commercial tour

Hollywood-backed Wrexham's pre-season friendly against Manchester United in Helsinki highlights the club's strategy of using high-profile fixtures to drive its global commercial expansion.

Wrexham will play Manchester United in a pre-season friendly at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki on Saturday. The match is part of a scheduling strategy by the club's Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, to pit their squad against high-profile European opposition.

These fixtures serve a clear commercial purpose for a club leveraging its celebrity backing into a global brand. After facing United, Wrexham will travel to the United States next week for further matches against Leeds United, Liverpool and Sunderland, replicating previous American tours.

Manager Phil Parkinson views the Helsinki match as a crucial preparation step. "For Man United, it's an important game for them as it is for us," Parkinson said. "So, a great test for us, it really is."

United boss Michael Carrick will be missing several players due to World Cup commitments. However, Parkinson expects a strong squad and emphasized the tactical value of facing superior opposition. "The out-of-possession stuff becomes really important against the better-quality teams," Parkinson noted. "But as we've always done, we're not just going to these games to stop the opposition."

Wrexham have reintegrated defenders Dom Hyam and Liberato Cacace following their World Cup campaigns with Scotland and New Zealand respectively. Hyam did not feature for Scotland, while Cacace started all three group games for New Zealand. Parkinson stressed the need for the right intensity in Helsinki without risking injuries.

"The main thing for both teams is the game has got the right intensity level, and there's a competitive element to it," Parkinson said. "Obviously no one wants to pick up any injuries at any stage, but particularly at this stage in pre-season."

Wrexham previously beat a youthful United side 3-1 in San Diego in the summer of 2023, when Wrexham were League Two-bound. Parkinson wants a similar benchmark before departing for the US. "For our lads, it's just focusing on what we need to do in this game and make sure that we come away from it with the preparations, taking that next step forward before we get on the plane to America," he said.
