Arsenal target Villa's Rogers as Premier League fees soar
Newly crowned Premier League champions Arsenal are preparing an approach for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, a move that underscores the exceptional financial premiums in English football's summer transfer market.
Arsenal have made Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers their top transfer target this summer, with an approach to the Birmingham club expected imminently. The 23-year-old England international has emerged as a highly sought-after asset in a window where Premier League spending is again dictating the broader European market.
The pursuit of Rogers highlights the sheer financial gravity of the English top flight. Forwards of his profile are now expected to command fees in excess of £100m, a valuation benchmark set by recent deals for midfielders Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali. Arsenal, fresh off ending a 22-year league title wait, possess the commercial and sporting weight to operate at this level.
Villa, however, hold a strong negotiating position. Rogers signed a new contract running until 2031 last November, and the club is not looking to sell. The player has missed only two league starts in two seasons, helping Villa to a fourth-place finish and the Europa League title, which secures their place in next season's Champions League.
Arsenal's urgency stems from a need to balance their squad for a European campaign. The departure of Leandro Trossard to Besiktas and the uncertain future of Gabriel Martinelli have left the left flank exposed. While £67.5m signing Eberechi Eze can play wide, he operated primarily as a number 10 last season.
The statistics illustrate why Arsenal specifically want Rogers to fill this gap. Last season, 43 per cent of Arsenal's attacks went down the right flank compared to just 33 per cent on the left. At Villa, attacks tilted to 37 per cent on the left when Rogers played there, and his output for goals, chances and assists increases when he operates from that wing.
Should Villa refuse to negotiate, Arsenal have prepared alternatives. They have already agreed a £34m deal for Club Brugge winger Tzolis, a record fee for the Belgian Pro League. The club also retains an interest in Julian Alvarez and Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola, though Alvarez prefers a move to Barcelona.
The competition for Rogers underscores his rapid market ascent. Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have all monitored the player since his £16m move from Middlesbrough in 2024. For Arsenal, securing him would not just address a tactical imbalance, but signal their intent to sustain their domestic dominance on the continent.
