Liverpool tie down title-winner Szoboszlai to 2031

Liverpool tie down title-winner Szoboszlai to 2031

Liverpool have secured midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai on a five-year contract, protecting the club's £60m investment in a player who drove their recent title win.

Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool that runs until the summer of 2031. The 25-year-old Hungarian had two years remaining on his previous agreement. Discussions between the player's representatives and Richard Hughes accelerated in recent weeks, culminating in a swift resolution.

The extension locks down a core asset shortly after Szoboszlai was named the club's player of the year. Liverpool paid £60m to acquire him from RB Leipzig in July 2023. In the highly competitive European football market, tying a player entering his peak years to a long-term deal protects the club's initial financial outlay and deters potential suitors.

Szoboszlai's willingness to commit his future to the club was apparent throughout the negotiation process. Liverpool clearly view him as an integral part of their setup. He was a key member of their 2024/25 title-winning team, a success that has firmly established his value within the squad.

"It's maybe my biggest day," Szoboszlai told Liverpoolfc.com, placing the contract extension behind only his initial arrival at Anfield and the birth of his child in his personal rankings. "Very happy. [I] can't wait to go again and again and again. I'm just happy to be here, as I said many times."

The midfielder framed the new deal as a stepping stone rather than a final destination. "There's always more to come... I'm happy with myself but I think I can do even better," he said. "I think that's why I'm sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid: that it was never enough, and I'm thinking the same now."

He also emphasised his desire to take on a leadership role within the team. "I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can," Szoboszlai added.

His ambitions remain strictly tied to collective silverware. "When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn't change for a little moment either. It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let's say the Champions League. I'm ready to go for it."
