Tuchel's defensive subs baffle England players in World Cup exit

Tuchel's defensive subs baffle England players in World Cup exit

Thomas Tuchel's highly defensive substitutions in England's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina have drawn quiet criticism from senior players and sparked a broader debate about the technical limits of English football ahead of Euro 2028.

England’s World Cup campaign ended in a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina on Friday, overshadowed by internal doubts over Thomas Tuchel’s tactical approach. After taking a 55th-minute lead through Anthony Gordon, the head coach substituted his goalscorer to deploy a back-five, a move that left several senior players baffled.

With Argentina dominating possession and Lionel Messi leading repeated attacks, Tuchel replaced Gordon with Ezri Konsa and later withdrew the ill Declan Rice for Nico O'Reilly. This left England with six defenders on the pitch, four of whom were centre-backs, while pacy wingers Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze remained unused on the bench. Players felt this removed any attacking outlet, leaving the defence with no respite as Argentina's pressure inevitably told.

The numerical shift in personnel reflected a stark collapse in control. Between Gordon’s goal and Lautaro Martinez’s stoppage-time winner—after Enzo Fernandez had equalised—England managed just 12 per cent of the ball. Marcus Rashford was finally introduced in the 96th minute, far too late to influence a recovery.

Tuchel did not believe his tactics were at fault, instead pointing to a systemic weakness in English football’s DNA. He suggested his players lack the capacity to keep possession under pressure, a trait he believes separates them from their Spanish, Argentinian and Brazilian counterparts. It remains to be seen how the squad receives this assessment of their fundamental capabilities.

For European football, the episode highlights the persistent friction when elite continental management meets English talent. Tuchel’s deployment of a low block was designed specifically to neutralise Argentina’s width after they shifted Messi to the right and brought on Nico Gonzalez in a 4-2-4 formation, yet it exposed a severe lack of ball-playing proficiency in his ranks.

Despite the tactical discord, the atmosphere within the camp remains stable, with no rift reported and Tuchel retaining his authority and popularity among the squad. The Football Association has also maintained its full backing of the coach. Tuchel is "100 per cent" committed to remaining in the role to lead the team into Euro 2028, where England will host the tournament alongside Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
