Man Utd £35m Ederson deal fails, player stays at Atalanta
Manchester United has abandoned a £35m transfer for Brazil midfielder Ederson after a medical assessment, forcing the club to reallocate its summer investment budget to alternative targets.
Manchester United has pulled out of a proposed £35m transfer for Atalanta midfielder Ederson after medical specialists raised concerns over the 27-year-old's fitness. The Premier League club had agreed the fee with the Serie A side on 2 June. However, a complex sequence of international commitments disrupted the completion timeline.
Ederson received a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad as a replacement for the injured Wesley. This forced the postponement of a medical initially scheduled for early July. When the player eventually underwent preliminary tests in the United States during the tournament, an unspecified area of concern emerged.
He subsequently flew to England for a comprehensive assessment involving specialists. These tests took place after Brazil's elimination by Norway in the last 16. The results prompted United to walk away from the agreement entirely.
For Manchester United, the collapse represents a sudden shift in summer capital allocation. The club has already adjusted its strategy by securing alternative midfield assets. Manager Michael Carrick has brought in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, along with goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds United.
While reports had suggested the deal could be revived later in the window on revised terms, that possibility is now closed. Ederson has instead committed his future to Atalanta by signing a contract extension. The Italian club did not disclose the duration of the new deal.
By extending Ederson's contract, Atalanta preserves the market value of a player who recently attracted a £35m valuation. For United, the failed transfer underscores the strict due diligence applied to major sporting investments, even as the club executes a pivot in its squad rebuild.
