US ambassador's mega yacht sparks Venice protest over security costs

US ambassador's mega yacht sparks Venice protest over security costs

A 117-metre yacht touring Italy to mark a US anniversary has drawn protests in Venice, highlighting public anger over the taxpayer burden of securing American diplomatic luxury.

Several hundred protesters gathered in Venice on Friday to denounce the arrival of the US ambassador's mega yacht, the 117-metre Boardwalk. The vessel entered the city's waters flanked by Italian police speedboats and jet-skis, while masked officers on shore kept the crowds at bay. The demonstrators shouted slogans hostile to US policies in the Middle East as they attempted to approach the heavily guarded ship.

The Boardwalk is currently touring the Italian coastline as part of an embassy-organised celebration of the 250th anniversary of the US declaration of independence. While the diplomatic mission has framed the voyage as a festive occasion, the logistics have quickly become a domestic political issue. Opposition deputies have launched sharp criticisms of the tour, focusing their attacks on the direct costs passed on to the Italian public.

At each stop along the itinerary, the massive 384-foot yacht requires a comprehensive and expensive security umbrella. Taxpayer funds are used to deploy naval, coastguard and police units to ensure the safety of the vessel and its passengers. For opposition lawmakers, this represents an unjustifiable diversion of public resources to facilitate a floating diplomatic party.

The frustration on the ground in Venice reflects a broader local fatigue regarding the city's role as a staging ground for ultra-wealthy American visitors. Protest organisers explicitly linked the ambassador's visit to last year's high-profile Venice wedding of US billionaire Jeff Bezos. They described the arrival of the yacht as a fresh "slap" to local people, contrasting the extreme wealth on display with the daily economic reality of residents who struggle to make ends meet.

Beyond the financial objections, the demonstration served as a focal point for broader political grievances. The organisers condemned what they termed the "arrogance of the ambassador", characterising the lavish tour as "the product of Trumpian politics". This framing suggests that the yacht has become a lightning rod for wider European discontent with current US foreign policy and the perceived heavy-handedness of American diplomacy.

As the Boardwalk continues its journey down the Italian coast, the embassy will have to weigh the diplomatic value of the anniversary tour against the ongoing political fallout. The scenes in Venice demonstrate the risks of blending high-profile diplomatic milestones with overt displays of wealth in European cities facing economic strain.
