Messi and Yamal set for World Cup final clash after decade-old Barcelona photo

Lionel Messi will face 19-year-old Spain star Lamine Yamal in Sunday’s World Cup final, marking a remarkable full-circle moment for Barcelona as Yamal aims to become the youngest player to win both the European Championships and the World Cup.

Lionel Messi is preparing to face Spain’s Lamine Yamal in Sunday’s World Cup final, a matchup the Argentine captain described as "crazy" given their shared history. The two were photographed together in 2007 when a 20-year-old Messi held the then five-month-old Yamal during a charity event at Barcelona.

Speaking at a news conference in New York, the 39-year-old Messi reflected on the enduring image. "That photo is incredible," he said, adding that the fact they are both competing in the World Cup now is remarkable.

Yamal, now 19, has inherited Messi’s iconic number 10 shirt at Barcelona after making his debut at age 15. He already helped Spain secure the Euro 2024 title and is poised to become the youngest player ever to win both the European Championships and the World Cup.

Messi offered high praise for his successor, calling him a "tremendous player" and a "global star" with his entire career ahead of him. However, he made it clear that Argentina will actively try to neutralize Yamal’s impact on the pitch.

"I wish him luck because his success will be Barcelona's success," Messi noted. He emphasized that Spain possesses a strong collective squad, but affirmed Argentina would give their all to prevent Yamal from lifting the trophy this time.

These comments emerged during a Friday fans' event in New York, which also featured Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Spain captain Rodri. The promotional gathering was hosted by former England defender Rio Ferdinand and actor Kevin Hart.

The event drew significant attention from other sporting legends, with tennis star Novak Djokovic and NBA player Kevin Durant joining NFL icon Tom Brady in asking questions. Brady had earlier described the 2007 photograph of Messi and Yamal as "very prophetic".

Beyond the players, the upcoming matchup highlights deep institutional ties between the two nations. Following the news conference, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni embraced Spain counterpart Luis de la Fuente, who previously served as an instructor when Scaloni obtained his Uefa Pro coaching licence in Spain.

The New York event also featured a notable altercation off the football pitch. Tom Brady argued with YouTuber and WWE star Logan Paul on stage, escalating until the seven-time Super Bowl winner slapped Paul. New York Knicks player Karl-Anthony Towns then intervened to separate them.
